Paul loving life in Taunton

Paul van Meekeren, who recently signed a contract until the end of the season, is just loving his time at the Cooper Associates  County Ground.

The Dutchman, who has played two ODI’s and 15 T20I’s for his country has settled in now and said: “I’m really loving it here with Somerset.  It’s new and it’s a lot of cricket and a lot of games but it has been really good.  I’ve enjoyed it.”

Paul went on: “I really enjoyed making my home debut for Somerset against Middlesex here in the T20 at Taunton and I was happy with the way that I bowled.  I made one mistake, which was a bit costly but I was happy with the way that I went about my business.”

How did he come to be involved with cricket in the first place?  “My Dad has always played cricket and loves the game,” he said.  “He played a lot of football too when he was younger and at the same club they also played cricket, so I have always grown up watching my Dad play cricket on Saturdays and now he plays for the veterans!  He got me involved at his club where I played football and cricket in the summer and now it has become just cricket for me.”

“I am really excited to become involved with professional cricket, which doesn’t really exist in Holland apart from the national team which is semi professional at the moment.”

“I set myself a goal. I decided that if I wanted to become a professional cricketer then I had to go to England, so I joined a club in Newcastle.  I started playing for them and I thought that I might get a few second XI games for Durham but then Glamorgan ,where one of my Dutch team mates is playing, wanted to have a look at me and my second three day game was against Somerset.

“Somerset were keen to have a look at me so I played for the Seconds the  following week with Chris Rogers and Marcus Trescothick in the team. One thing led to another and here I am now playing for Somerset.  The last few weeks for me have been really good and it has all happened so quickly.

“Last year I had a really good summer for the Dutch national team and I played in the semi final against Ireland and really played well so there was a start for me.  Then we had another series when I did really well, so last year was a bit of a breakthrough for me for the national team.”

Paul added: “I then carried that form into the World Cup and then playing club cricket here so everything has rolled on quickly.  Now here I am just settling in at Taunton at the moment and enjoying myself and my cricket.”
